Plus Size Wedding Dresses
Finding and purchasing a plus size wedding dress is not the easiest feat to accomplish. Many traditional salons carry only a limited amount of sample dresses to try on, and most are not usually stocked in plus sizes. Trying on a size 10 gown when a bride needs a size 20 does not allow the bride to get a real sense of what the gown will look like on her in the appropriate size. National Chain stores, such as David’s Bridal, often do carry a range of styles in stock for the plus size bride to try one, but here are some other tips for the plus size bride:Skirt style:
A-line and empire waist gowns usually accentuate the positive attributes of the plus size bride. They help create curves and camouflage problem areas. Skirt styles to stay away from as a plus size bride are the sheath and mermaid cut gowns.
Sleeves/No Sleeves:
Many plus size brides are surprised to find that they like strapless dresses as opposed to tanks, halters, or sleeves. If you really want sleeves on your plus size wedding dress long and / or fitted sleeves work best, try to avoid the puffy sleeved dresses because they cause added bulk to your arms.
Neckline:
Look for a gown with an open neckline such as scoop and V-necklines because these are usually more flattering. Be sure to wear a supportive bra (especially if you are going strapless). And for added help, choose a minimizing garment to help support and lift.
Fabric:
You will want to choose a fabric that falls nicely and accentuates the positive aspects of your body. Stay away from fabrics such as crepe because they cling to every inch of your body. Also avoid heavy fabric such as velvet or heavy satin because these can cause added bulk. Look for lightweight Satin and Chiffon fabrics. Also look for fabrics with a Matte finish and make sure that the fabric isn’t shiny or glossy, which can make you, appear less sleek.
Accessories:
Choose accessories that draw the eye to your neckline and face. Remember your necklace, earrings, and headpiece (should you choose to wear these items) are every bit as important as the gown you choose!
Most designers offer their gowns in plus sizes, often for an additional charge, anywhere from $40-$100 is standard, some designers charge nothing, and others may charge several hundreds dollars extra.
Many designers also have lines within their regular collections that they designer specifically for the plus size bride.
